U.S. Objects to Addition of Iran, Cuba, and Nicaragua to UN Human Rights Group

Nations with “problematic” human rights records are set to be included in forming and implementing UN policies.

The United States was the lone nation to object to the United Nations’ (UN) Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) recent nomination of Cuba, Iran, and Nicaragua to the UN’s Committee for Program and Coordination. The committee shapes policy on women’s rights, disarmament, and the prevention of terrorism.

In its objection, the United States stated that Iran, Cuba, and Nicaragua were “unfit” for the position.

ECOSOC also elected China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan to a committee on nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), which provides oversight for human rights and civil society organizations.

Critics of the nominations expressed concern over the inclusion of states that have poor records on human rights in influential bodies. The director of one international watchdog group stated, “Appointing China, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia to oversee human rights activists is like putting Al Capone in charge of fighting organized crime.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Ambassador Michael Waltz as he represents the United States at the United Nations.
  • For U.S. officials as they engage in policy discussions with foreign ministers.
  • For Secretary of State Rubio to be discerning as he oversees U.S. diplomatic efforts.
